  • Bio

    Dr. Fisher obtained a PhD in Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin. He then worked as a postdoc at the National Institute of Mental Health, in the laboratory of Neurochemistry. While carrying out research there on neurotransmitters, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He recovered, and to humanize the mental health system obtained an MD through George Washington Medical School, and completed a three-year residency in general psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He has worked for 44 years as a board-certified, community psychiatrist. In that capacity, he was the Medical Director for a catchment area of 130,000 persons, for both inpatient and outpatient care. In those capacities, he gained extensive experience working with persons with severe mental health issues and with dual diagnoses. During the last 30 years, he co-founded and has been CEO of the National Empowerment Center. and is President of the Board of NEC. During the last 15 years, he has co-founded and is now Vice Chair of the board of the National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery.

    Dr. Fisher was a member of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and was a professor at U. Mass Dept. of Psychiatry. He is one of the developers and trainers of Emotional CPR. He published a book about his recovery from so-called “schizophrenia” and of the peer recovery movement called "Heartbeats of Hope."
