The trial's results are hotly anticipated and scheduled for release at the end of August in the Lancet.
The ODDESSI trial is the largest randomized controlled trial of Open Dialogue to date. Conducted across multiple sites in the UK, the study compared the effectiveness of Open Dialogue to treatment as usual within the National Health Service (NHS.) Open Dialogue, originally developed in Finland, is a collaborative approach to mental health care that brings together the individual in crisis with their chosen support network—family, friends, and clinicians—in a series of dialogic meetings. The approach emphasizes shared decision-making and person-centered care.
The ODDESSI trial aimed to rigorously evaluate whether Open Dialogue could offer better outcomes in terms of recovery, wellbeing, and service use. Its publication marks a significant milestone in the international conversation about alternatives to traditional psychiatric care.
Presenter Bio
Dr Russell Razzaque is a Consultant Psychiatrist, Associate Medical Director, Clinical Director for Mental Health Transformation and Director of Research & Development at the UK National Health Service in North East London. He is also a mindfulness teacher and is a Bye Fellow at the University of Cambridge.
Russell’s primary teaching and research interests are mindfulness, therapeutic relationships and holistic models of care. He has published a range of papers in peer reviewed journals, implemented pilot teams in a range of NHS Trusts and he is currently clinical lead for a large NIHR funded, multi-centre randomised controlled trial, studying the implementation of a systemic, person-centred and holistic approach to mental healthcare in the NHS, known as Open Dialogue.
Russell also writes political columns for national and international publications like The Guardian and The Independent and has published several books on human psychology, philosophy and politics.
